How To: Glaze Kitchen Cabinets

Antique white cabinets make quite the statement with their highly detailed surfaces, glazed finishes, and carefully chosen hardware. Your paint color should support and continue that statement. That doesn’t mean that you have to go colorless, there are several tones that go great in a traditional space. A great place to start for kitchens with white cabinets is with historical colors. Most paint companies offer a line of historical colors they can recommend. A light, muted grey or soft ivory are perfect if you want your wall to fade gently into the background without being boring. Muted navy and toned down paprika reds really make those white cabinets glow if you are a fan of darker colors.

Dark glaze on light cabinets skews even more dramatic and antique by using extra shadows to accentuate surface details. Perhaps the best part of working with glaze is that there’s no regret. How to Glaze Kitchen Cabinets

Before you refinish your cabinets with cream paint and glaze, you must prepare them properly. Start by removing the cabinet doors, drawers and hardware. In a kitchen, cabinets usually have smoke, oil and other residue on their surface that may not be visible to the eye, so you must thoroughly clean them with a degreasing cleanser. Follow up with a deglosser, which will remove any lingering greasy residue. Once the cabinets are clean and dry, use 100- to 220-grit sandpaper to sand the surface so the cabinets will accept the paint more easily. For the best results, apply a primer before painting. If your cabinets are made from a tight-grained wood like cherry or maple, an oil-based primer works best.

However, for cabinets made with an open-grained wood like ash, oak, hickory or mahogany, a brushing putty is a better option because its thick consistency allows it to fill the grain and prime the wood at the same time.

I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend!!
i have been busy busyi think i said these cabinets would take about 5 more hoursha! more like 10or more! i’ve been working on them in between other stuff, but it is a little more time consuming than i remembered. I glazed these cabinets before we moved in the house almost 8 years ago. I had the painters paint them a cream color. I think the name of the color was alabaster i’m going to have to check on that. You can see in the bottom cabinets that i put a very light glaze on them. I didn’t want to mess them up at the time and really didn’t know what i was doing either. Through the years i’ve always thought they needed a little more glaze to darken them just a little and add more warmth to the kitchen. Finally after almost 8 years i’ve decided to tackle this project again! as you know i am also adding new hardware which really updates these cabinets! love it! click to enlarge the pics and you will be able to see the difference. It’s not a huge change, but just enough to add a little more warmth and update to the kitchen.

Wood cabinetry can be glazed too! we always stain and seal cabinets first so the glaze doesn’t permanently absorb into the wood grains. Your kitchen design specialist will show examples of both so you can choose the look you prefer. Wood-stained cabinets with glaze have a richer and more rustic look than those without.

For that modern antique style
glazing—it’s all the rage…but what exactly is it? let’s just say, it’s an amazing finish that blends a rich and timeless look with a more modern appeal. Suitable for any design style or décor scheme, glazing is what’s trending now!
think “chic antique”—this is what our glazing process strives to achieve. And the kitchen cabinets we’ve glazed most certainly impress. This finish brings out the details, the lines, the textures and inherent richness of your cabinetry. It is truly a spectacular finishing option. And once we’re done, you won’t believe you’ve walked into the same kitchen.

Hello experts,
we are in the ever confusing pre-fab vs custom kitchen cabinets for our house in last stages of big remodel. For pre-fab we are considering grand j&k cream maple glaze which for 23’x13. 5′ plus 9’x4′ island size, we got a quote for ~18k. Quote from local custom maker for similar door/color style is 27k. However custom guys says we could 4k if we go with door/color without glazing/highlighting.

Part 2 of 3: Applying the Glaze

Hand-applied glaze pen accenting is applying a transparent, semi-transparent, or colored coating to the grooves and bevels found on cabinet doors, particularly traditional raised panel styles, to highlight the architectural features such as the molding, corners, and bevels.
glaze
Adding either a single line, double, or multiple lines to the bevels on the cabinets creates the illusion of a high contrast to accentuate every detail of the cabinet. This glazing technique may also alter the appearance of the surface texture of the cabinet, creating the illusion of deep grooves while drawing attention to the craftsmanship of the cabinets. Some of our styles featuring a penned accent glaze are: cream glaze , cinnamon glazed maple , mansion pearl , mansion brown , and belgian white chocolate glaze.

Glazing is a painting technique that alters the color or texture of a surface. It is often used when applying faux finishes to walls, cabinets and furniture. Glazing is a technique that is used to alter the appearance of traditional paint. It can change the hue or tone of the color, and it can make the color appear more translucent or transparent. Glazing can also be used to create texture on walls and is often used for faux finishing techniques. Glaze is also applied during painting techniques such as color washing, rag-rolling and sponge painting. Glaze is available in acrylic and water-based formulas, and they vary in drying time. An extender may be required to allow a large area to be painted before the glaze begins to dry. The ratio is typically one part paint to four parts glaze. Glaze works better on wet surfaces, so it is helpful to keep the wall damp as the glaze is being applied.

Gel stains provide a uniform color for wood cabinets. Its coarse viscosity makes it easier to spread evenly than liquid stains. It is also easier to avoid dripping and runs on vertical surfaces with liquid cabinet gel. Gel stains do not penetrate the wood deeply, so they do not increase the grain of wood or different types of wood unevenly. Unfortunately, they can cost more and require more layers of dye. Here’s an easy explanation of how to glazing kitchen cabinets using gel stains.

Glazing cabinets can be a foreign idea to most homeowners. It’s not like glazing a piece of pottery. Having kitchen cabinets glazed goes one step further after painting your cabinets. Cabinet glaze adds a second color into your cabinet finish. This is done by mixing the base paint color with a darker glaze for a thinner, more translucent version of the paint.

What is all over cabinet glazing?

Sand the entire glazed kitchen cabinet, inside and out. Be sure to remove all of the current glazing; otherwise, the new coat will not adhere to the surface. When sanding the corners, be sure to use a small piece of sandpaper to reach between the cracks.

What color glaze do I use on my cabinets?

Greetings to all. Me and hubby have been working on new kitchen and have done everything ourselves. I am going to glaze the cabinet doors and would like to know suggestions, comments, what not to do etc, on glazing the cabinet doors. Cabinets and doors were primed with kiltz 2 latex primer and then painted with benmoore light cream color called “bare” latex semi-gloss paint. The doors are mitered/raized panel doors. I want to put a glaze on them in a mocha color and have it hold in the crevices of the doors. My question is what is the best way to do this??? should i use the benmoore glaze and mix it with the paint color that i want and wipe on wipe off?? should i brush the glaze on? we have worked very hard on this and i really do not want to mess this up. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

About 5 years ago, before my kitchen renovation last year, i painted my white, chipping cabinets ben moore oil-based paint in olive branch. I had to do a lot of sanding around the areas that were chipping, cleaned them and then painted them. Couldn’t be happier and i love them so much i decided to keep some of them when we renovated. So now i have those sage green cabinets, a black distressed island and also pine cabinets with a glaze along one wall. My granite is mascarello and has lots of movement with mostly caramel and black and a little white coloring.

Glazed cabinets have a very distinct look that gives them a different feel than ordinary painted or stained cabinets. A glaze on your cabinet can give a darker, vintage look, which will nicely add accent to a room. This look can give layers of depth to an area where there were previously flat colors. You can choose from a pewter, chocolate, or black glaze for many of our existing door colors to give them more depth and feel.

You accomplish this by rubbing the glaze and paint solution on the cabinet or by rubbing a watered down layer of paint over the cabinet. The technique will create a translucent layer over the existing paint. As a result, the glaze highlights the details of the cabinets.
